What does safflower mean?

In our catalogue safflower represents warmth. It symbolizes energy, friendliness and down-to-earth strength thanks to its bold orange tone that immediately radiates warmth. As a cut flower it fits occasions where you want to convey a feeling of comfort or a sunny thank-you, for example birthdays, housewarmings or a cheerful pick-me-up. Its robust look also makes it ideal for rustic, natural bouquets where color is the main focus rather than delicate blooms.

When is it in season?

Safflower blooms mainly in summer, typically from June to September. The plant originally comes from the Mediterranean and West Asia and is now cultivated in various warm regions worldwide. You’ll find fresh safflower mainly during the summer months; afterwards it’s often available dried. Drying preserves both color and form very well, so safflower remains an attractive option for long-lasting arrangements outside its fresh season.

What to combine it with in a bouquet?

Safflower works wonderfully with bold, textured partners. In our catalogue we recommend sunflowers, Craspedia and yarrow, they support the warm color and rustic effect. Add airy grasses, dried wheat heads or eucalyptus for contrast in shape and texture. For a harmonious bouquet, vary heights and use foliage with calm tones so the orange safflower remains the focal point.

Safflower in the vase: step by step

  1. Trim the stems freshly on a diagonal and remove any leaves that would sit in the water.
  2. Place the safflower in a clean vase with lukewarm water and a little floral preservative.
  3. Choose a cool, bright spot out of direct sun and keep the flowers away from ripening fruit.
  4. Change the water every two days, re-cut stems if needed and remove any wilting parts.
  5. To dry, hang safflower upside down in a dark, airy place; this preserves color and shape.

Giving safflower as a gift, now and out of season

Safflower makes a great gift because it impresses fresh and lasts a long time when dried. If you give it out of season, dried safflower stems are a lovely alternative, they keep their color and structure. And our bouquet service: Flora creates a digital bouquet sent as a link that ‘blooms’ and even wilts like a real one if you don’t save it. That way you can send immediate joy and later opt for a real bunch with fresh or dried safflower.

Frequently asked questions

How long does safflower last in a vase?

Safflower typically stays fresh for 7 to 12 days, depending on care and environment. Regular water changes, fresh cuts and cool storage help extend its vase life.

Is safflower toxic to cats?

Safflower isn’t known to be highly toxic, but pets shouldn’t eat flowers. If you suspect ingestion or notice a reaction, contact your veterinarian.

Why does safflower droop?

Drooping can be caused by lack of water, dirty water or stems that need a fresh cut. Re-cut stems, change the water and choose a cool spot; very mature blooms may also droop naturally.

What does the orange color of safflower mean?

Orange stands for warmth, energy and joy. The color makes safflower perfect for autumnal bouquets and as a bold accent in rustic arrangements.
