What does the gladiolus mean?

The gladiolus has long symbolized strength, resilience and character. In the language of flowers it’s often chosen for occasions where you want to express courage, admiration or respect, for congratulations, to honor an achievement, or to show support in challenging times. Unlike very delicate blooms, the gladiolus appears confident and architectural, so it often forms the vertical backbone in clear, modern arrangements. Our orange gladioli add an extra note of energy and determination, making the bouquet strong both visually and in its message.

When is it in season?

Gladioli traditionally bloom in summer; the main season for cut flowers runs from July to September. Many varieties come originally from South Africa and the Mediterranean, so the plants prefer warmth and plenty of light. At the florist you’ll mainly find fresh gladioli during these summer months, though protected cultivation can bring them a bit earlier or later. For best freshness look for firm lower buds, they’ll open in the vase and extend the display time.

What pairs well with it in a bouquet?

Gladioli work beautifully as height-givers in a bouquet and pair well with lush, round flowers. We recommend dahlias and sunflowers for warm, bold summer arrangements, while white lilies create an elegant, crisp contrast. For foliage choose eucalyptus or ruscus for structure, or delicate grasses for an airy look. The slim shape of the gladiolus leaves room for voluminous companion blooms, mix different flower shapes and heights so the orange spikes stand out. Three stems bring instant presence and balance to any arrangement.

Gladiolus in the Vase: Step by Step

  1. Trim stems freshly at an angle with a sharp scissors or knife.
  2. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline to keep the water clean.
  3. Fill a clean vase with lukewarm water and add cut flower food.
  4. Change the water every two days and re-cut the stems when needed.
  5. Place in a cool spot away from direct sun and ripe fruit, three stems are often enough for a show-stopping look.

Giving gladioli now and out of season (the bouquet series: Flora ties a digital bouquet you can send as a link that ‘blooms’ on screen and, if not saved, visually wilts like a real one)

With our bouquet series you can give gladioli even outside their season, either as a fresh arranged bouquet or digitally. I personally arrange bouquets and ship them carefully so the stems reach the vase in top condition. As a special option I create a digital bouquet you send by link; it ‘blooms’ on the screen and follows the same timeline as a real bouquet, visually wilting if it isn’t kept. For fresh delivery choose sturdy packaging and cut flower food so gladioli arrive fresher and last longer for the recipient.

Frequently asked questions

How long do gladioli last in the vase?

Gladioli typically stay fresh for 7 to 10 days when treated properly. Fresh cuts, clean water and regular water changes are essential.

Are gladioli toxic to cats?

Yes, gladioli are considered mildly toxic to pets and can cause stomach and digestive upset if eaten. Contact a veterinarian if you suspect ingestion.

Why does my gladiolus flop over?

Heads that flop are often caused by lack of water, too-warm temperatures, or the top flowers being too heavy. Re-cut the stems, check the water and move to a cooler spot, it will often perk up again.

What does the orange color of the gladiolus mean?

Orange stands for energy, joy and courage and complements the gladiolus’s general meaning of strength. An orange bouquet looks lively and confident.
