Dahlia: Meaning, season and care in the vase

The dahlia is a bold cut flower with strong presence. Its deep red tone immediately adds depth and elegance to any bouquet. As a late-summer bloom it catches the eye, especially when paired with dried grasses. With the right care a dahlia will stay fresh for several days and show off its sculptural shape.

What does the dahlia mean?

In our catalogue the dahlia stands for elegance and strength. More broadly, the flower symbolizes dignity, inner strength and steadfastness, so it suits occasions where you want to express respect or admiration. Red dahlias are especially striking when you want to emphasize passion and depth. They're often chosen for anniversaries, farewell bouquets or refined arrangements because their form and colour send a strong, upright message. Paired with clean lines or textured grasses you get a modern, confident look that feels both festive and stylish.

When is it in season?

Dahlias are classic late-summer and autumn flowers, typically in season here from July to October. Originally from Central America, they’re now grown in many regions, usually from tubers that bloom in summer. Dahlia flowering depends on warm temperatures and long days, so they appear once conditions are right. Local harvests make them particularly attractive in late summer, while availability is usually lower in spring and early summer. For freshest cut flowers the peak time is clearly high summer into early autumn.

What to pair them with in a bouquet?

The red dahlia works well with partners that have strong presence and structure. With us they combine beautifully with anemones, sunflowers and protea, flowers that create contrast while matching the dahlia’s presence. For modern bouquets dried grasses are an ideal complement; they add texture and vertical movement. For foliage choose eucalyptus or salal to calm the colour and create breathing space between blooms. For a balanced result work with varied heights and textures: one dominant dahlia, supportive mid-sized flowers and fine grasses as filler give a harmonious bouquet.

Dahlia in the vase: Step by step

  1. Cut stems fresh and at an angle, ideally under running water.
  2. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.
  3. Fill the vase with fresh, lukewarm water; cut-flower food can help.
  4. Change the water every two days and re-cut the stems each time.
  5. Keep dahlias out of direct sun and away from heat sources; support heavy heads if needed.

Gifting dahlias, instantly and out of season (the bouquet series: Flora ties a digital bouquet, sends it as a link that blooms and wilts like a real one if you don't keep it)

If dahlias aren’t in season or you want to send something at short notice, you have two options. We can either use available local or imported stems to create a physical bouquet, or you can choose our digital service: Flora arranges a bouquet, photographs or designs it digitally and sends a link that visually ‘blooms’ and, like a real bouquet, ‘wilts’ unless you save it. The link is a flexible gift idea that can be delivered instantly. On request we can combine a digital greeting with a later physical replacement once dahlias are fresh again.
