What does the camellia mean?

The camellia traditionally stands for admiration and quiet appreciation. With its perfectly formed, silky blooms it conveys elegance and restraint at the same time, which is why it’s often chosen for formal occasions, anniversaries or as a gesture of subtle admiration. Pink camellias signal friendly affection and appreciation without drama, so they’re ideal for elegant arrangements or gifts when you want to show respect and warmth. In calm bouquets the camellia often takes center stage without being loud, it works best when the overall expression stays refined and focused.

When is it in season?

Camellias mainly bloom from late winter into spring; here they’re most available from December to April. In milder climates, parts of Italy or Galicia, for example, they produce particularly impressive flowers and are widely cultivated. Varieties and regions differ, so some types may bloom earlier or later, but generally they’re a winter and spring flower. Growers can time the harvest for cut flowers, so if you want truly fresh, full heads, plan orders for that season. Outside those months you’ll need special varieties or greenhouse-grown supply.

How to pair it in a bouquet?

Camellias shine in calm, elegant combinations. Our pink camellias go especially well with white roses, peonies and ranunculus, as white or pastel tones support the delicate look. For greenery choose glossy leaves like salal or ruscus and a touch of eucalyptus for a light structure without dominating. Avoid too many small, wild blooms, a few larger partner flowers create a harmonious composition. For classic bouquets pick similar bloom sizes and a clear color scheme. Camellias need space and look most refined in airy, uncluttered arrangements.

Camellia in the vase: step by step

  1. Cut stems fresh at a diagonal; better to cut underwater to avoid air entering the stems.
  2. Remove any leaves below the water line so nothing rots and contaminates the water.
  3. Use a clean vase and lukewarm water; add flower food if needed.
  4. Camellias prefer cool spots, avoid warm rooms, direct sun and drafts.
  5. Check the water daily and change it when needed; remove spent blooms to keep the vase looking fresh longer.

Giving camellias as a gift, immediately and out of season

You can also gift camellias outside the main season because we source carefully and work with our growers. We create a digital bouquet that’s sent as a link, it ‘blooms’ and ‘wilts’ like a real bouquet if it’s not kept. That means you can send the digital bouquet right away and schedule the real delivery for when the flowers are available, or surprise the recipient later. For urgent gifts we offer options with suitable substitute flowers or white partner blooms so the impression stays elegant and consistent even when true camellias aren’t widely available.

Frequently asked questions

How long do camellias last in a vase?

With proper care camellias usually stay fresh for 3 to 6 days. Fresh cuts, clean water and cool placement are important; changing the water daily extends vase life.

Are camellias toxic to cats?

Camellias are considered non-toxic for cats and dogs. Still, you shouldn’t leave leaves or blooms freely accessible, plant debris can cause mild stomach upset.

Why is my camellia drooping?

Drooping blooms often mean the stems lack water or air has entered the vessels. A fresh cut, slicing the stems underwater and refilling the vase usually helps the flowers perk up again.

What does pink mean for camellias?

Pink camellias stand for affection, admiration and warm appreciation. They’re a restrained choice for gifts when you want to convey respect and gentle sympathy.
